Training - Love or Hate

January was a hard month and it took a while to get back into training mode but after a lot of talking to myself I managed to get out on the bike and start running again.

Having done an Ironman last year(The Outlaw 12.45). This year is time to focus on work and shorter distance tri's so it has taken the pressure off of those long sessions.

Goals for this year is to break 60 mins at Leybourne and do a sub 2.30 Olympic.

As far as blogs go one month at the moment until the season kicks off.

I need an incentive to get me out on a bike over the winter months so I entered Tour of Flanders in April. So far the plan has worked and I have been out most weekends.

I have a similar plan for running as well a 10k in May. More about this later. Good news is here we are nearing the end of February and training is going well. So far I have managed a 5k in 22.30 and 10k in 47.28

Manic March

Better late then never having just about got through March. It was not a good Month I managed to get sick and was really busy at work which meant the amount of training I did was not ideal. This meant I only managed a 63% training rate.

The good news is the training that I have done this month has been excellent on all three disciplines and feel that I am where I need to be at this time of the season.

With the clocks changing as well it does now mean I can ditch the turbo and hit the open roads. Which makes training on the bike so much more fun!

Fun in February

Hi All,

February was a great month and I managed to hit 71% of possible training days. The amount of training days increased to 21 days compared to 16 days in January. Both the cycling and running I have managed to increase in distance as well. But have kept average heart rate below 150.

I also joined a triathlon club in February. I have been going to a local lake for some years now and finally after several years decided to commmit to a triathlon club. I have been for years a person who enjoys training on there own, being so competitive a training session with other people always turns into a race for me.

So now I am a proud member of Team Outrageous who are based at Leybourne Lake in Kent. A guy called Mike Russell runs the club he has been round for some time and is a great swim coach.

Below is a summary of my training in the last two months and also a copy of one of my bike rides. The Garmin is a great bit of kit and allows you to compare your runs and rides which is really useful when you are looking to analyse your training.

No Pain, No Gain

So I have already mentioned that I am competing in the Outlaw Triathlon in August. But there are various stages to achieving this goal.

The main one being train, train and train. There is no supplement or piece of kit that will replace your lack of training. Every triathlete will tell you the evening before the race your last thought before finally going to sleep is - have I trained enough, I should have done more!

The answer is get yourself a training plan, stick to it and bring some races into that training plan so that you have a mix. Some people love to train, some love to race. You need to find a happy medium and without both you will struggle to succeed in triathlon.

Why? Well without the base work that training provides you will not be in good enough shape to complete your race. You need to race to sample the atmosphere of a trathlon and feel the buzz. There is no better feeling than starting with 1000 people all hitting the water at once and coming out of that swim unscathed.

The adulation and shear joy of finishing your first or fifth triathlon never leaves you!

Watch my progress as I strive to finish the Outlaw, but before that, there is the Half Ironman at Leybourne!!

The Outlaw is looming?

Hi, my name is Triathlon Trev !

I started this blog as over the years since I started to do triathlon, it has become my passion and overtaken my life (as it has for many - don't tell the wife!)

People come to Triathlon from many different backgrounds.  Me, I came from a marathon running background, the minority I know!!!  Wish I had been a swimmer!  Never mind a cyclist!!

All I know is that it is addictive?  Are you addicted???
So addictive in fact, that I had to start a blog about it - and soon a complete website dedicated to it.....watch this space.

So my name is Trevor, and I AM Triathlon Trev to everyone and anyone who knows me.  It has officially taken over my life (and others... but more on that later!).

I aim to give you my Ironman training experience over the next 6 months whilst I lead up to THE OUTLAW.  The Outlaw will be my second Ironman - the first one (as it is for many UK triathletes), Sherborne was my ultimate ambition.  In 2007, I completed the Sherborn UK Ironman in 14 hours, 6 minutes and 7 seconds - I had no set time to achieve this in - just wanted to be alive when I crossed the finish line.  I would definately say that I was alive - my wife who was waiting at the finish line might tell you different.  Was I green, did I pass out shortly after - it is all vicious rumours.......

No matter how I felt afterwards, the feeling of actually doing it and completing it was HAPPINESS, PRIDE, ACHIEVEMENT AND THE  MOST FAMOUS WORDS - YOU ARE AN IRONMAN...  Doesn't get any more caveman than that!!!!!

So you have done it once - it is a legal drug - you just have to do it again.  It has taken this long to get permission from the missus for the amount of training that Ironman takes but here I am again and booked into THE OUTLAW.  It has been 3 years sure, but I am fighting  back and I WILL beat my 14 hours - if it kills me.

Watch this space for my weekly updates - the highs, the lows, the tranining, the nutrition, the stupidiness and of course the glory...

Let me know what you are up to on the Triathlon scene and I hope this blogs helps inspire you and motivate you towards achieving your Triathlon Dream - there is nothing better
